A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's eastern region shortly before 8 am local time on Wednesday, April 3. This prompted tsunami warnings for the self-ruled island and parts of southern Japan. It is reported that at least four people were killed and nearly 60 injured.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan today (Wednesday, April 3). Following this, a tsunami warning has been issued for the island of Taiwan and its neighboring countries.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of this earthquake was 18 km south of Hualien, Taiwan. is far away. The quake struck at 5:30 am IST (07:58 am Taiwan time) with a magnitude of 15.5 km. struck deep. It also caused nine aftershocks.

Many buildings in Hualien are half-destroyed and leaning at dangerous angles. Rescue operations are ongoing for people trapped in collapsed buildings in Hualien and other areas. At least 12 people were rescued from the Uranus building in Hualien.

At least 26 buildings have collapsed, more than half in Hualien, with about 20 people trapped and rescue work ongoing, said the Taiwan Fire Department. It is reported that at least four people were killed and nearly 60 injured.
