An 11th standard girl from Tiruchirapalli allegedly died after eating Chinese noodles that she had ordered online. This incident prompted officials from the state health department to raid noodle wholesalers in Trichy, resulting in the seizure of approximately 800 kg of expired Chinese noodle packets.
What Happened To Steffi Jacklin?
The victim, Steffi Jacklin, a student in the 11th grade from Ambikapuram in Ariyamangalam, reportedly ordered the noodles online along with coke. She cooked and consumed the noodles late at night.
In this case, her body was discovered by her parents the following morning. The shocked parents decided to make arrangements for her final rituals.
The sudden and tragic death of the girl raised suspicions among neighbours, who informed the police. The police stopped the final rituals and asked to send her body to autopsy. Relatives of the deceased argued with authorities to allow burial, while news of the girl's death due to online-purchased noodles spread, causing a stir in the area.
Food Safety Department:
After this Food Safety Department started an investigation and revealed that the noodles the girl ate were of Chinese origin and had been purchased through Amazon. State Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that the noodles were expired, which contributed to the girl's death.
In response to the incident, health officials conducted a raid on a local wholesale food business in Tiruchirappalli, uncovering large quantities of expired noodle packets. These were seized and disposed of at the Ariyamangalam landfill. Additionally, a sample of a Coke soft drink with the same batch number was taken for analysis.
The wholesale business has been temporarily closed, and legal action will be pursued against the owner under Section 56 of the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006, according to District Nominating Officer Dr. R. Ramesh Babu.
