TN Weather: Low Pressure Formed Near Chennai, Heavy Rain Alert

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 21 districts across Tamil Nadu. A low-pressure area formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal at 5:30 AM on October 14. This system is expected to move west-northwestward toward North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with heavy rainfall expected across the state over the next four days.

Northeast Monsoon:

The Northeast Monsoon is expected to start either on October 15 or 16. With this monsoon, the region can expect significant rainfall, which may continue for an extended period.

Heavy Rainfall:

For the past two days, several districts in Tamil Nadu have already experienced heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging and traffic disruptions. 

With the Pooja holidays, passengers traveling to their native places have been severely affected by these rains.

In addition to overcrowded trains and buses, waterlogged roads have worsened travel difficulties. In this case, for the coming days, heavy rainfall is expected in various districts of Tamil Nadu.

According to the Meteorological Department, as of today, the following areas are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, and Puducherry and Karaikal.

In addition, Heavy Rainfall Likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Tiruchirapalli, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram districts.

Prevention Efforts:

In expectation of the Northeast Monsoon, the state has mobilized resources to prevent flood-related issues. Chennai has deployed 15 IAS officers to oversee monitoring and relief operations, including the ongoing preparations at the Ripon Building. 

Additionally, 83 sewage suction trucks have been put into service to manage waterlogging. To improve the preparedness, officials from other districts have been deployed to assist in the efforts. 

Chennai:

A red alert is issued for Chennai and the Chennai Corporation has urged residents to keep their mobile phones and electronic devices fully charged in case of power outages. With rain predictions in the coming days, many residents have already flocked to supermarkets to stock up on essential goods. 

Areas including Mylapore, Mukappher, Mandaiveli, Santhome, Marina, Annanagar, Avadi, Tambaram, Mangadu, and Poontamalli are expected to be heavily affected by the rain.
