TN Weather: Heavy Rain In 13 Districts And Cyclone Dana Updates

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in 13 districts and light to moderate rain likely to occur across Tamil Nadu. Also, a low pressure (Dana) formed in the Bay Of Bengal likely to bring heavy rains to Tamil Nadu on October 23.
Heavy Rainfall:
According to the Meteorological Department, the districts include Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, and Mayiladuthurai. Heavy rain is expected to occur at isolated places within these areas over the next 24 hours.
Chennai Rains:
On October 20, many parts of Tamil Nadu received widespread rain including Chennai. Chennai is reported to receive light to moderate rain beginning as early as 6 a.m. on the morning of October 21.
In Chennai, areas such as Tiruvallikeni, Annasalai, Nungambakkam, and Vadapalani received light rain, while areas like Pallikaranai, Madipakkam, Guindy, and Velachery experienced more widespread rains.
The sky in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy, with the possibility of light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas throughout the day. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 33-34°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be between 25-26°C.
Tamil Nadu Weather:
For the rest of Tamil Nadu, the Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places in several regions. This includes not only Tamil Nadu but also the areas of Puducherry and Karaikal.
Cyclone Dana:
In addition, a Low-Pressure Area has formed over the East-Central Bay of Bengal and the North Andaman Sea, following an upper air cyclonic circulation. This system developed early morning (05:30 IST) on October 21, 2024, and is expected to bring very heavy rainfall to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today.
This cyclonic low-pressure named Dana is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23, bringing heavy rains to many districts of Tamil Nadu.
The department further stated that the cyclonic circulation over the sea has been causing moderate rainfalls in Chennai and adjoining districts including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur. Additionally, the low-pressure area is very likely to move northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24.
