TN Weather: 24 Districts Under Heavy Rain Alert, WFH Advised

The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in 24 districts across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions due to the low pressure formed.

A low-pressure system formed on October 14 early morning over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to strengthen and move northwest towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the southern Andhra Pradesh coasts.

School and IT Sector Advisory:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced the closure of schools and colleges in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on October 15, due to the heavy rain. In addition, he also advised IT companies in these districts to allow employees to work from home until October 18.

Northeast Monsoon Preparedness:

During a meeting over the weather on October 14, the Chennai Corporation Commissioner reported that extensive resources had been mobilized to manage the situation. These resources include 990 water pumps, 57 tractors with pump sets, 36 motorboats, 46 metric tons of bleach powder, 25 metric tons of lime powder, and phenol for sanitation efforts.

Heavy Rain Alerts:

An Orange Alert has been issued for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal, where extremely heavy rainfall is expected. In addition, heavy to very heavy rain is predicted in isolated places across districts like Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Thanjavur districts and Puducherry.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for districts including Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, and Pudukkottai districts.
