Coimbatore Semmozhi Poonga: Ministers Inspect Construction Site

Honorable ministers, Mr. K.N. Nehru and Mr. S. Muthuswamy, along with many other government officials and ministers, visited the construction site of Semmozhi Poonga, Gandhipuram today (August 5).
Semmozhi Poonga:
The Coimbatore Corporation is progressing on the development of Semmozhi Poonga, a green project with an investment of Rs. 167.25 crores.
The project, which will transform the current Central Jail site into a significant green space, is currently halfway through its first phase of construction in June 2024. The completion of this phase is expected by this month.
Semmozhi Poonga includes,
- A parking facility designed to accommodate 300 cars.
- A multi-purpose convention center with a capacity of 1,000 people.
- Comprehensive water supply connections and stormwater drainage systems.
The Central Jail is being relocated to the Vellalore compost yard, as part of this significant urban redevelopment initiative. The transformation of the jail site into Semmozhi Poonga is expected to improve the green space in the city.
Ministers And Officials Visit:
In this case, Hon'ble Minister of Municipal Administration, Mr. K.N. Nehru, and Hon'ble Housing Facility and Urban Development Minister, Mr. S. Muthuswamy, along with other key officials including District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati I.A.S., Corporation Commissioner Mr. Ma. Sivaguru Prabakaran, and Deputy Mayor Mr. R. Vetriselvan, visited and inspects the construction site.
The panel also included Deputy Commissioner Mr. S. Selva Surabi, former Member of Legislative Assembly Mr. N. Karthik, Municipal Chief Engineer Mr. Anbazhagan, and various other Corporation officers.
Foundation work for the convention center began in February 2024. Initially planned as a multi-level parking structure, it will now be developed as a surface-level facility with potential for future expansion based on demand.
