A Police head constable attached to Kovilpalayam Police Station, Coimbatore, was arrested on August 4 for sexually harassing and blackmailing a minor girl studying class 8. This came to limelight after the girl's parents filed a complaint against the police.
The accused, Ravikumar (39) from Sulur, resides with his wife and 10-year-old daughter, according to the police. Sources indicate that Ravikumar was transferred to the Kovilpalayam station from Coimbatore city a year ago.
According to sources, the minor class 8 girl was seen with a class 10 boy when the police head constable Ravikumar spotted them on August 3. He has beaten them and chased the boy saying that he will report their relationship to their parents.
Later that evening, Ravikumar allegedly went to the girl’s house and demanded ₹1 lakh in exchange for not revealing their relationship. The girl refused his demand, explaining that her parents were present and the matter could not be discussed.
It is said that Ravikumar spotted them together again which fueled his anger. He took the photos of them and blackmailed them. The situation worsened for the teen as the "policeman" even sexually harassed her while the girl tried to snatch his phone.
Meantime, the girl managed to record the policeman blackmailing them and shared it with her father. Her father registered a case against the Police. Following the complaint, police filed a complaint against Ravikumar under the POSCO Act, Juvenile Justice Act, and BNS with the audio recording and the minor statement.
The Karumathampatti all-women police arrested and remanded Ravikumar to prison on Monday night. A policeman abusing a minor has created a lot of tension as they are supposed to protect people.
