Due to the increased intensity of the southwest monsoon in the Nilgiris district, there has been persistent heavy rainfall over the past few days. Consequently, the situation has significantly worsened across the district due to frequent power cuts.
The heavy rains have triggered landslides and uprooted trees in many areas. In Gudalur, rivers such as Thorapalli, Iruvail, and Padanthorai have breached their banks, leading to extensive flooding in the town. Furthermore, agricultural fields have been submerged, resulting in substantial crop damage.
The Theppakadu (Mudumalai) footbridge on the Gudalur-Masinagudi road has been submerged due to the floods, leading to the blocking of traffic along that route. Cracks in roads and streets in the Gudalur area have become more pronounced, causing significant concern among the local residents. The tourists who planned a good trip to Nilgiris are now dissapointed due to heavy rainfall.
In Pandalur, Cherambadi, and Thiruvalluvar Nagar, heavy rainfall has triggered landslides, with reports of cracks appearing in front of residences. In response to the situation, the affected individuals in the area have been accommodated in relief camps.
Local authorities have urged residents to avoid going out unnecessarily and to prioritize their safety. The schools have announced holidays as well.
