Flood Alert In Coimbatore As Water Level Rises In Noyyal River

The recent heavy rainfall in and around Coimbatore has prompted the forest department to issue a flood alert for areas near the Noyyal River. Due to the continuous rainfall, the popular Kovai Kutralam Waterfalls have been closed to the public. 

Noyyal River Flood Alert:

Due to constant rainfall, there was expected potential flooding in the Noyyal River. As per the latest reports, 300 cubic feet of water per minute is being discharged from Chitra Savadi, the first Anaicut of the Noyyal River, into the other areas, with an additional 120 cubic feet being directed to ponds via canals.

As per recent reports in Coimbatore, the water level at Siruvani Dam in Coimbatore has risen to 4.36 feet in one day. The dams and ponds around Coimbatore are filled with water. The situation remains monitored closely as further rainfall could worsen conditions. 

Residents and tourists are advised to stay informed and cautious during this period of heightened rainfall and potential flooding.

Kovai Kutralam Closed:

Kovai Kutralam is located 40 km from Coimbatore, these falls in the Sattal forest, near the Western Ghats, are a favorite destination for tourists seeking cool weather and refreshing dips. However, because of the weather, the waterfalls are being closed for the safety of the public.

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the Western Ghats on June 1, with heavy rainfall. As per reports of Wednesday indicate that 120 mm of rain has been recorded in the Siruvani area, with 60 mm in the foothills of Siruvani and 33 mm in Thondamuthur.

The heavy rains have caused the Coimbatore Kovai Kutralam Falls to overflow, leading the Forest Department to prohibit tourist access. Moreover, new waterfalls have occurred in the mountains due to the continuous rain.
