Coimbatore Expansion: New Merger Areas List Include In CCMC?

Coimbatore

Coimbatore, the second-largest revenue-generating corporation in Tamil Nadu after Chennai, is set to undergo significant expansion. In this case, there are many lists of areas for inclusion circulating online, but CCMC has not released the official list yet.

Coimbatore Expansion:

The Tamil Nadu government has begun plans to merge numerous village panchayats and borough councils with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) to broaden the city's boundaries. The Coimbatore city is currently overseeing 100 wards across five zones, this expansion will increase both the total number of wards and zones.

Coimbatore:

Coimbatore district spans 4,723 square kilometres, with the urban area covering 1,519 square kilometres. To facilitate the city's growth, a study was conducted on neighbouring areas suitable for inclusion within the city limits.

In Coimbatore, one Municipality, four Boroughs, and 11 Village Panchayats are expected to be merged into the Coimbatore Corporation. The merger of the village panchayats will take place after their tenure ends.

CCMC Statement:

Following these Coimbatore expansions, villages, and municipalities nearby the city are speculating to be added to the inclusion. There are also lists circulating online that they are joining Coimbatore Municipality. Asked about this, CCMC Commissioner Prabakaran has cleared the rumors.

He addressed the recent circulation of a list of merging villages and town panchayats on social media, stating that no official list has been finalized by the government. “The government had earlier asked us to submit a proposed list that can be merged with the CCMC. Currently, I cannot disclose the proposed places,” he added.

Coimbatore Inclusion:

The areas involved in the merger may include Madhukarai Municipality and several panchayats such as Irugur, Perur, Pallapalayam, Vellalur, Kurudampalayam, Somayampalayam, Perur Chettipalayam, Keeranatham, Neelampur, Mylampatti, Pattanam, Vellanaipatti, Kovilpalayam, Chinniampalayam, and Seerapalayam.

If these changes occur, the Coimbatore Corporation, currently with 100 wards, is expected to expand to between 150 and 200 wards. The merger proposals are expected to be finalized after the village panchayats conclude their term in December, with the expansion projected for completion by December 2024 or January 2025.
