As the Diwali festival approaches on October 31, special bus travel arrangements have been made for residents of Chennai heading to their hometowns.
Starting from today (October 28), Tamil Nadu’s government has introduced a fleet of special buses to accommodate the surge in travelers, with approximately 53,000 bookings already made for October 29.
Diwali is one of the most significant celebrations in Tamil Nadu, prompting many to return to their hometowns. To avoid overcrowding, the Tamil Nadu government has arranged for a total of 14,000 buses to operate across the state from October 28 to 30.
Special Buses Arrangements:
- A total of 4900 buses will operate, including 2,808 special buses and 2,092 regular buses. Additional city buses from Chennai to the Kelambakkam Bus Terminal will also run throughout the festival period.
- Buses will depart from major terminals, including Koyambedu, Madhavaram, and Kelambakkam, with additional services from other cities.
- Buses to various places such as Puducherry, Cuddalore, Trichy, Chidambaram, Salem, Coimbatore, Vandavasi, Polur, Thiruvannamalai, Kumbakonam, and Thanjavur will be deparfrom Kelambakkam.
- According to sources, over 1.25 lakh people have registered to travel in government buses, with 20,000 already booked for October 28 and 53,000 for October 29.
Travelers are encouraged to arrive early at bus terminals, especially since all buses heading to southern districts will operate from Kelambakkam. To improve passenger comfort, facilities such as drinking water, ATMs, and accommodation have been set up at key locations.
To manage the increased traffic, additional police patrols will be stationed at toll plazas to prevent congestion. Travelers using personal vehicles are advised to avoid routes through Tambaram and Perungalathur, opting instead for the Tiruporur-Sengalpattu or Vandalur outer ring road.
All transport corporation staff have been instructed to remain on duty throughout the festival, ensuring that the special bus services run smoothly and efficiently.
With these measures in place, the Tamil Nadu government aims to provide a hassle-free travel experience for all passengers during the Diwali festivities.
