At least five people have tragically died and over 50 others have been hospitalized following a tragic turnout at the Indian Air Force's air show held at Marina Beach in Chennai on October 6.
The eagerly awaited Indian Air Force event, marking the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force, became a scene of chaos, after many fell ill due to dehydration and exhaustion. For the IAF, lakhs of spectators from Chennai and nearby regions gathered to witness the air show, which was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
As the crowd gathered, local transport services, particularly buses and the Chennai Metro, struggled to manage with the sheer number of people, leading to massive congestion across the city.
Many attendees stood for 2 and 3 hours under the scorching sun, with temperatures soaring and few relief provisions. As a result, several individuals suffered from severe dehydration and exhaustion.
Due to dehydration, one person collapsed and died on the beachfront, while four others perished in the vicinity. The victims were part of the massive crowd that had gathered along the several-kilometer-long stretch of Marina Beach to witness the spectacle.
In the aftermath of the event, there was widespread criticism of the event's planning, particularly regarding crowd management and basic amenities. The insufficient provision of water, rest areas, and transport caused significant hardship for many, leading to further chaos as people rushed to leave after the air show concluded.
Local roads, particularly those near Marina Beach, were completely blocked with traffic, and public transport services like buses, the MRTS, and the Metro were overloaded.
Numerous individuals fainted due to exhaustion and were carried by emergency workers to nearby shelters for medical attention. The lack of preparedness from both the event organizers and local authorities has sparked intense criticism and anger from the public.
Political Reactions:
Sources say Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K Stalin who also attended the Air Force is ready to give 5 lakhs as compensation for the families who lost their loved ones.
TVK Leader Vijay:
In response to the tragedy, TVK leader Vijay expressed his condolences to the victims' families and highlighted the apparent mismanagement of the event. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he said,
"The incident in which 5 people tragically lost their lives during an event organized by the Indian Air Force at Marina Beach is deeply painful. My heartfelt condolences go out to their families.
The public has expressed concerns over the lack of basic facilities, transport, and security.
I urge the Tamil Nadu government to ensure better planning and management for events where large crowds gather to prevent such tragedies."
BJP Leader Annamalai:
BJP leader Annamalai also condemned the incident, placing the blame on the ruling DMK government. In a strongly worded post, he said,"I am deeply shocked by the news of 5 deaths and over 200 people being injured during the air show held by the Indian Air Force at Marina Beach. This tragic loss of life is a direct result of the DMK government’s negligence.
Basic facilities and transport arrangements were grossly inadequate, and the Chief Minister, who failed to make any arrangements, must take full responsibility. This is not an accident but a reflection of the government's total disregard for the safety and well-being of the public.
I strongly condemn Chief Minister Stalin and his administration for failing to prioritize the lives of the people, which has resulted in this tragedy."
