Chennai Braces for Northeast Monsoon, Preventive Measure Starts

Tamil Nadu is preparing for the Northeast monsoon, expected to arrive in the third week of October. The northern regions of Tamilnadu, including Chennai, are likely to experience significant waterlogging during this period, provoking the city to implement precautionary measures.

During the Northeast monsoon, northern Tamilnadu receives heavy rain while southern parts receive moderate rainfall. The northeast monsoon starts in October and lasts until December.

In this case, Chennai has already recorded heavy rainfall throughout the past week, experiencing 43% more rainfall than usual. With the start of the Northeast monsoon on October 3rd week, locals in these areas often struggle to meet their basic needs due to flooding.

Due to this, preventive measures are underway in Chennai, including the preparation of approximately 3,040 kilometers of canals. Cleaning waterways, such as the Buckingham Canal, Otteri Nullah, and Virugambakkam-Arumbakkam.

There also Canal construction, and expansion efforts for these waterways are currently underway to avoid potential flooding in Chennai.

TN Weather:

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a press release stating that heavy rain is expected across 10 districts in Tamil Nadu on October 2. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is also likely in various parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Heavy Rainfall:

According to Chennai Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected in isolated areas, particularly in the Ghat regions of Coimbatore district, as well as the Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, and Tiruchirapalli districts.

Chennai:

The sky is expected to be partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely in some areas. The maximum temperature is forecasted to be around 36°C, while the minimum temperature will range from 27°C to 28°C.

Coimbatore:

As for Coimbatore, the weather remains partly cloudy, with a possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is projected to be 35°C, with a minimum of around 24°C.
