Chennai: SS Biryani Shop Shut Down After 40 Food Poisoned

Food Safety Department officials in Chennai have shut down a popular biryani shop, SS Hyderabad Biryani, located in Kodungaiyur after approximately 40 customers reported encountering vomiting and diarrhea following their meals on September 16.
The food safety officer, Dr. P. Satheeshkumar, stated that the persons affected started showing symptoms within three hours of eating the biryani. Some were admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet, while others sought treatment at private hospitals, around ten were treated as outpatients and discharged.
The complaint was lodged against the popular SS Hyderabad Briyani shop on September 18. However, officials were unable to collect food samples for testing, as the management had already disposed of food items.
Dr. Satheeshkumar after witnessing the kitchen's hygiene conditions were substandard, made immediately shutdown of the shop and said, “Since it’s a long process, in emergency cases, officials lock it". Satheeshkumar said the restaurant won’t be allowed to operate without submitting required documents like a license and has been given 15 days to submit them.
The Chennai Corporation stated that patients are currently being treated for their symptoms. However, it has not been confirmed whether it was a case of food poisoning. While some families have reported consuming bucket biryani, it has not been confirmed if this was the case for all others who fell ill.
