Reasons Behind NASA and Japan Mission To Launch Wooden Satellite

Satellite Representative Image

America's NASA and Japan's JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) are all set to launch the world's first wooden satellite, 'Lignosat,' into space. This innovative project aims to make spaceflight more sustainable.

What Is Lignosat?

Lignosat is a cube-sized satellite made from magnolia wood. This satellite is ready to launch into Earth's orbit this summer, 2024.

Using biodegradable and renewable materials like wood is an alternate option for expensive materials like stainless and titanium. This could also tackle the growing issue of space waste. The magnolia wood used to build the satellite was chosen for its durability, lightweight, and resilience to the harsher conditions of outer space.

Why NASA and JAXA Go For Lignosat?

According to researchers, wooden satellites such as Lignosat will significantly be less harmful than those made from other materials. Hence, after successfully testing the wood samples earlier this year, the ISS (International Space Station) scientists believe the test satellite is all fit to launch this summer.

This satellite will carry several instruments and sensors designed to examine wood's performance in space. The satellite will also test wood's structural integrity, thermal conductivity, and ability to withstand radiation exposure in space.

It is also said that in the future, this groundbreaking project will make a revolution in the space industry. Hence, it is also believed that the Lignosat mission will reduce the impact of spacecraft re-entry.

Aim Of Launching Lignosat:

This project aims to pave the way for integrating wood into multiple space applications. Lignosat's launch by NASA and JAXA signifies the most promising step towards more sustainable spacecraft and revolutionising spacecraft technology.

Apart from Lignosat, both JAXA and NASA have been involved in enhancing spacecraft sustainability. This Lignosat mission extends to a future where the wood will become a pivotal material in crafting space stations, satellites, and even spaceships.

Lignosat mission:

Ultimately, the Lignosat mission is a remarkable step towards reducing the increasing issue of space debris, which could seriously threaten future space explorations. The reason is that traditional metallic satellites will contribute to atmospheric pollution, potentially harming Earth's orbit.

Therefore, let's hope the advent of wooden satellites in space technology prompts a rekindling future for space exploration.
