Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced that one of the four astronauts selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission will visit the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a joint mission with NASA. 

The upcoming  Mission, scheduled to launch after August 2024 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is a collaboration between Axiom Space, NASA, and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). 

In addition, the Gaganyaan project is an initiative aimed at showcasing India's capabilities in human spaceflight. The project involves sending a crew of three astronauts into a 400 km orbit for a three-day mission and ensuring their safe return to Earth, marking a significant milestone in India's space exploration endeavors.

The four astronauts, referred to as 'Gaganyaatris,' are highly skilled Indian Air Force pilots, including Group Captains Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubanshu Shukla. They are currently undergoing training at ISRO's Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru, preparing for their historic mission into space.

The Gaganyaan mission is ISRO’s first human spaceflight project, expected to launch next year.
