DMK's Ward 29 Councilor R Ranganayaki has been elected unopposed as the new Mayor of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation on August 6, 2024.
The Mayor's election came after the resignation of the previous Mayor, A. Kalpana, who had been the first woman to hold the position as Mayor in Coimbatore. Kalpana resigned on July 3, prompting the need for an indirect election to fill the now-vacant mayoral seat.
The State Election Commission subsequently scheduled the election for August 6. In this case, a nomination process was held on August 5. Ranganayaki, representing the DMK, was the only candidate to file her nomination.
Due to the absence of any opposition or additional nominations, R. Ranganayaki was the sole candidate elected to the mayoral post unanimously, with no contest.
She was accompanied by the Honorable Municipal Administration Minister, Mr. K.N. Nehru, the Honorable Housing and Urban Development Minister, Mr. S. Muthusamy, and the Electoral Officer/Municipal Commissioner, Mr. M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran.
She was awarded the victory certificate, scepter and seated as the Honorable Mayor. Former Minister of Pongalur, Mr. N. Palanisamy, Deputy Mayor Mr. R. Vettiselvan, Deputy Commissioners M. Selva Surabhi, Mr. K. Sivakumar, former Member of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. N. Karthik, and Corporation officers were present.
Coimbatore Corporation on the X account also announced her Mayor post saying, "Coimbatore Municipal Corporation Victoria Hall 06.08.2024 Mrs. K. Ranganayaki, 29th Ward Councilor of Coimbatore Corporation was unanimously elected unopposed in the indirect election for the post of Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation."
