BJP Annamalai Regrets Leak of Annapoorna Owner Apology Video

Annapoorna Owner and Nirmala Sitharaman

BJP Tamil Nadu leader K. Annamalai has issued an apology after a video of a private conversation between Annapoorna restaurant chairman Srinivasan and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was leaked.

The Annapoorna chairman's apology video was filmed and shared by an insider, and that went viral on social media. This caused a backlash, as many criticized the video leak as a breach of privacy directed at Srinivasan.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with entrepreneurs from various sectors, at the Codissia campus in Coimbatore on September 12. In this meeting, the Annapoorna chairman emphasized the confusion caused by varying GST rates on items on the same bill.

He pointed out that sweets are taxed at 5%, savories at 12%, and cream-filled buns at 18%, while plain buns are not taxed at all. This criticism of GST taxation was made in a satirical manner.

Annamalai's Apology:

After the leaked apology video from the Annapoorna owner went viral and created much controversy, the BJP party faced backlash from the people. In response to the fallout, Annamalai took to Twitter to X account his regret.

He stated, "I sincerely apologise for the actions of our functionaries who shared a private conversation between a respected business owner and our Hon. FM."

He continued stating that he spoke to Annapoorna Chairman Srivansan and expressed his regrets for his breach of privacy.

In added that, "Annapoorna Srinivasan Anna is a pillar of Tamil Nadu’s business community, contributing significantly to the state’s and nation’s economic growth. I request everyone to lay the matter to rest with due respect."

Opposition Party Statement:

The incident has been used by the opposition to criticize the government's handling of GST issues. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, condemned the treatment of Srinivasan, suggesting that a simplified GST with a single tax rate could address the challenges faced by many businesses.

He highlighted the difference in treatment between small business owners and wealthy individuals, asserting, "When the owner of a small business like Annapoorna restaurant asks for a simplified GST regime, his request is met with arrogance and outright disrespect. Yet, when a billionaire seeks to bend the rules or acquire national assets, PM Modi rolls out the red carpet." in his x account.
