Wayanad Landslides Update: 156 Dead, Rescue Operation Intensify

Wayanad Landslide Update

As of now, the tragic landslides in Wayanad have claimed at least 156 lives and left over 200 people severely injured. The devastating series of landslides occurred early yesterday (July 30) morning near Meppadi, impacting areas such as Mundakai Town, Attamala, and Chooralmala.

Rescue Operations:

In response to the disaster, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared a two-day state mourning. Rescue efforts are in full swing, with the army deploying 200 soldiers from the Defence Security Corps and a specialized medical team to support the operations. 

Additionally, two helicopters from the Air Force Station in Sulur, Tamil Nadu have been dispatched to aid in the rescue and relief efforts. Chief Minister Vijayan has announced the establishment of 45 relief camps in Wayanad, where more than 3,000 displaced individuals are currently being rehabilitated.

Rahul Gandhi Wayanad Visit Postponed:

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have tried to visit  Wayanad which is postponed. They were scheduled to meet with the families affected by the landslide and assess the situation. 

Due to persistent heavy rains and adverse weather conditions, authorities have informed them that landing will be impossible at this time. Rahul Gandhi assured the people of Wayanad that he will visit as soon as conditions permit. In the interim, he highlighted that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide all necessary assistance.

He wrote in his x account about this, "Priyanka and I were scheduled to visit Wayanad tomorrow to meet with families affected by the landslide and take stock of the situation. 

However, due to incessant rains and adverse weather conditions, we have been informed by authorities that we will not be able to land."
