On August 10, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Wayanad to personally meet the people affected by the recent landslides. The landslides occurred on July 30th due to heavy rains, resulting in the complete burial of the Mundakai, Chooralmala, and Attamala areas in soil. The current impact includes 427 deaths, 273 serious injuries, and 138 missing individuals.
PM Modi is scheduled to land at Kannur airport around 11 am by special flight and will then inspect the affected areas via helicopter. At 12:15 pm, he will meet with people staying in relief camps and those seriously injured and receiving treatment in hospitals to offer condolences.
A high-level meeting chaired by PM Modi will follow, during which the details of reconstruction efforts in Wayanad will be discussed. This visit has generated significant anticipation in Kerala, with expectations of major announcements. It's worth noting that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been advocating for the Wayanad landslide to be declared a national calamity.
Heavy security measures have been implemented across Wayanad district in preparation for the Prime Minister's visit, including enhanced surveillance at railway and bus stations, as well as changes to transportation in major cities.
