With the Maldivian ministers commenting against Prime Minister Modi, there has been a huge blow to the country's tourism sector.
On January 2, Prime Minister Modi visited Lakshadweep for two days. Photos of PM Modi walking on the seashore and resting in a chair went viral on social media. He also expressed his views regarding his travel experience.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated various projects worth Rs.1,150 crore in Lakshadweep. He also did many activities like hiking and scuba diving on the beach.
Meanwhile, Maldives Ministers of Youth Empowerment Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Sharif, and Abdullah Mahsoom Majid criticized Prime Minister Modi by commenting on his pictures. This has sparked criticism on social media. An explanation was sought from the Government of India regarding this incident.
At the same time, the issue took shape when the opposition parties, including the former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, condemned the comments of the Maldives ministers. The Maldivian government subsequently suspended the three ministers involved.
This has led to a huge decline in tourism in the Maldives. It has been reported that 10,500 hotel rooms and more than 5,000 flight tickets booked so far have been cancelled in the Maldives, the most popular tourist destination. It is said that this could cause a huge change in the Maldives' economy. Also, the hashtag #BoycottMaldives is trending on X's website.
