A recent study found that the fairness cream user ends up with a Kidney disorder. Similar kinds of incidents have already been reported in India.
India has a vast market for beauty products, and the advertisements for fairness creams are widespread across the country. Indian skin tones are naturally darker or brown, but due to the influence of these advertisements, people have started believing that fair skin is more desirable. As a result, many individuals have started using instant fairness creams to change their skin tone.
Researchers say, "Most cases resolved on cessation of use of the inciting creams. This poses a potential public health risk, and it is imperative to spread public awareness about hazards of using such products and alert health authorities to curb this menace."
A recent study published in the medical journal Kidney International has revealed that fairness creams sold in India contain high levels of mercury, which is a leading cause of Membranous Nephropathy (MN). This condition can lead to damage in the kidney filters and protein leakage.
Dr Sajeesh Sivadas, Department of Nephrology, Aster MIMS Hospital, Kottakkal, Kerala, mentions, "Mercury gets absorbed through the skin, and wreaks havoc on kidney filters, leading to a surge in nephrotic syndrome cases."
The study documented 22 cases of Membranous Nephropathy from July 2021 to September 2023. Out of 15 people, 13 had used the fairness product before experiencing symptoms.
It is important for customers to be aware that using instant fairness cream can lead to kidney disorders. Therefore, they should carefully examine the ingredients in their skincare products and choose safer alternatives.
Instead of relying on quick fixes, a healthy diet that includes plenty of vegetables and fruits can enhance the natural glow and brightness of the face. Although it may take longer to see results, this approach is far better than risking health issues and organ disorders.
