Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies has been officially selected as India's 2025 Oscar nominee. The 12-member jury selection team stated that Laapataa Ladies represents Indian culture best among 29 movies.

The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, has gained attention worldwide for its blend of humor, heart, and sarcastic social commentary.

Why Laapataa Ladies Chosen For Oscar 2025?

For the 2025 Oscar movie selection, 29 movies were submitted to the 12-member jury headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua. Barua recently explained the reasons behind selecting Kiran Rao’s film as the official entry.

Following the selection many started to question why Laapataa Ladies was chosen over other movies shortlisted. In this case, Barua explained it to a private channel, that the jury aimed to select a film that "truly represents India" across various dimensions. The film needed to reflect India’s social systems and ethos, and Laapataa Ladies excelled in that regard.

He further stressed that it is vital that the film chosen to represent India at the Oscars is the best-suited one. While there may be stronger contenders outside the 29 nominated films, the jury's responsibility is to select from the options presented.

Laapataa Ladies Plot:

Laapataa Ladies is about two new brides, Phool Kumari and Jaya, who accidentally switch places during a chaotic train journey in rural India in 2001. Phool finds herself stranded at an unfamiliar station, while Jaya becomes part of Phool's husband Deepak's family. 

With the help of a sympathetic tea stall owner named Chhaya Kadam, Phool learns to navigate her new circumstances, while Jaya bonds with Deepak's family as she deals with her past. What will happen next? is the rest of the story.
