Maruti Suzuki increased the price for selected models? - Has BS-VI started impacting much before getting implemented?

BS-VI norms in a couple of months are still seen as aspiration may or may not possible by many in the auto industry. Amidst this, the market leader has announced a price increase for select models from its stable. The reason quoted for the increase in price is the input cost. The price increase is effective from January 27th, 2020, as claimed by the company release.

If the market leader increases the price well in advance, then similar moves can be expected from other manufacturers as well. Post-BS-VI norms, the diesel vehicle price will increase by 15-20% according to sources. Most of the manufacturers have not totally stopped the diesel vehicle production is a good sign that the combustion engine's life expectancy is more.

Maruti Suzuki has quoted a price increase of 4.7% from the prevailing price on the select models. The increase in price will be on Alto, Wagon-R, S-Presso, Swift, Ertiga, which are sold through Nexa and Arena channels of the automaker. The primary reason for the increase in input cost might be due to BS-VI norms, where the engine should be tuned accordingly, which may need additional technical embellishments.

The market leader also announced the launch of Alto BS-VI-S-CNG in India at a starting price of Rs 4,32,700 (ex-showroom, Delhi). This move is to support the green mobility aspiration of the country. With S-CNG technology, there are many more vehicles in the pipeline. With this CNG version, the oil imports could be curtailed, which is also the mission of the Indian Government. The vehicle is available in two variants LXi and Lxi(O). The company also claims that it sold over 100,000 BS-Vi compliant Alto in India.
